Lynn Studio of Vocal Technique

Karla HendrickLyric-Coloratura Soprano(Musical Theatre and Operetta)

As a straight actress (who sang only when I HAD to!) I came to Joyce hoping to strengthen my voice a bit for those rare times when I needed to sing...I have found that I can now actually compete as a singer -- something I never expected! I have no already worked professionally in musicals! She is one of those rare teachers who not only prepares her students for moving forward, but EXPECTS and DESIRES them to do so!

Alicia Hutchison SteffannMezzo-Soprano(Popular and Musical Theatre)

After the extensive vocal experience I gained in college I was naively skeptical that voice lessons could really make much of a difference in my performance ability. I couldn't have been more wrong! After seven continuous years of study with Joyce, it's as if I have a new voice -- richer, more flexible, and far more effortless in quality. In a roundabout way, this metamorphosis has allowed me to stop worrying about technique and begin to focus more on bringing warmth and personality to the music I love. I have performed at great New York cabaret rooms like The Duplex and Danny's Skylight Room and was able to continue my cabaret work in Boston and Washington D.C. Truly, the time I have spent with Joyce is one of the best investments I've ever made in myself.

In the years that I've studied with Joyce Lynn, I have accomplished more, vocally, than I ever expected! Starting as a beginner, I had limited expectations of my vocal abilities, but Joyce's techniques (and individual approach to each pupil) have provided me with a solid foundation in all aspects of my training because she incorporates the proper technical elements with presentation and artistry. It's a COMPLETE course of study. Now, when I go to auditions, when asked if I can sing, I can say “YES” with poise and confidence!

In the years that I have studied with Joyce Lynn, my vocal range has extended from one octave to three octaves! Before I began studying with her, I had only done some pop and R&B music Using not even one quarter of the voice I had. I was very insecure at auditions and of singing in public at all. She has not only given me security, but opened my voice to its fullest extent and widened my musical knowledge, and is teaching me such a wide variety of repertoire that I am able to sing any style with confidence.

Rosalie RiveraLyric-Soprano(Musical Theatre, Cabaret, R&B)

I was referred to Joyce Lynn by a friend already studying with her. I had recently graduated from Hunter College, a drama major, but had not done any singing but R&B since high school. I desperately wanted to get back to my singing (had never really studied technique, seriously). I wanted to launch a professional career, so here was my chance. When I started with Joyce, I was using only about one octave of my range, which was all in chest and belt. I had not used my “head” voice since chorus in high school! Within two months, my range had opened up to over two octaves, including the soprano head voice I had totally forgotten I had. Now, I have over two and one half octaves in my voice and have developed into a “crossover” singer, able to sing belt, chest, and legitimate soprano up to and including high C. I now have a repertoire of over 20 songs, of all styles, and have started auditioning, and developing a cabaret act. I am very excited with my work in Joyce's studio.
